Koume

The small plum pattern is the first item on the cover of Morisa's sample book "Morisa Collection."
This time I would like to think about Koume.

What do you think of this pattern, which Morisa calls "Koume" (small plum), compared to an actual plum blossom?
Something is different...

That's right! Plum blossoms have five petals. Morisa's small plums have six.
Did you notice?
In fact, I used to look at the plum blossom mark often when I was a student, but I didn't notice it until someone pointed it out... (laughs)
It might be more appropriate to call it a small flower pattern rather than a small plum. (But at Morisa, it's still called "small plum"!)

When I researched about Koume...
Originally it was called "Sunoki (vinegar tree)" and its other name was "Koume"
→Koume is another name... How widespread is it? The flowers bloom in spring and the fruit grows in summer.
→Many people already know this.
In the summer, you can see limited-edition dishes and sweets made with plums.
As a plum lover, I have a weakness for the words "limited time only" at this time of year (lol).

Let's investigate a bit further...
It has long been used to express the three levels of Shochikubai,
Among them, the plum blossom is said to represent "someone who never loses a smile even in harsh situations, as it blooms in the harsh winter."

There are many other legends about plums, so why not try using them to wrap gifts and other things, based on your own interpretation?

Finally, we'd like to introduce some of the ready-made Koume products available at Morisa!
- Laminated candy bag : Just put your homemade sweets inside and seal it with heat to create wrapping that looks like the kind you'd buy in a store!
Flat paper/small plum lace ...Perforated lace paper with a plum flower pattern. It is see-through, so it can also be used as a cover for jelly. ・Japanese pattern bag/small plum ...Japanese paper bag with a small plum pattern. I was surprised that it was stronger than I thought! Recommended for those who want to gift wrap but are not good at wrapping with wrapping paper.

There are other products with small plum patterns available, so if you're interested, head over to LadyRisa Tosa Washi now!
We look forward to your gift wrapping ideas.
If you have any ideas on how you used it or would like other people to know about it, please send us an email.

Next time, Morisa's original pattern "Floating Clouds"
What thoughts did Morisa put into Ukigumo? Please look forward to it!
